Façade Breadth
Due to the high solar heat gain through the existing façade materials and large percentage of glass, the wall system will be changed as a method of lowering the energy use for the HVAC systems. Much of the glass will be removed from the existing wall system to be replaced by a façade with more insulation to slow heat transfer through the building envelope. After the redesign, the architectural impact will be reviewed. Also, the wall support and backup system for wind will be adjusted for the modified façade. A moisture and thermal analysis will be performed on the new wall system.
Structural Breadth
In order to support the PV panels from the electrical breadth, structural calculations will be performed to secure the panels to the roof. The structural connections must be strong enough to withstand forces from a hurricane. Also, the added roof load from the panels must be considered to see if the roof layout needs to be redesigned to withstand a higher load.
Electrical Breadth
Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and battery storage will be utilized in order to generate electricity on site. Since the main two levels have a much larger footprint than the tower footprint, there is about 81,000 square feet of roof space above those levels for PV panels. Assuming an annual average of 0.518 kWh/day/SF for this project’s location, about 42,000 kWh/day could be produced. This would cover the daily mechanical energy use. Also, utilizing thermal storage with the panels can help stabilize the energy use as the solar drops off at night.
